Gold Metal Leaf Demilune Table with Mirrored Glass

This piece catches the light so beautifully! Originally dating from the 1930s. The photos include before and process photos, as well as ones that capture its luminosity at various times of the day (natural daylight, dusk light, and in the evening with the room lamp on).

Each of the mirrored glass tiles (111 of them!) have had their silvering carefully antiquated to the reverse, leaving a natural looking patina of an antique mirror in appearance.

The gold metal leaf has also been antiquated to dull down the bright, shiny and new appearance, leaving a beautiful, rich 24 carat gold gilt hue of an antique piece.

The leaves design to each of the leg knees, were also designed by me out of clay, to add a little more interest and tactility overall. They were then gold gilded and a dark glaze was applied to create a natural oxidised appearance and added definition to the recessed areas.

The top surface is gorgeous! It has been conditioned, oiled, waxed and buffed to bring its wonderful grain (there are a few very fine superficial cracks in an area on this surface, which I’ve tried my best to photograph! But they’re not obvious and do not at all detract from the appearance)

I wanted to create a piece that has grandeur and elegance, whilst also not looking out of place within less glamorous surroundings, such as the modern lived in home.

*Please note*: 

Please note: 3 of the glass tiles were very finely cracked (these were salvaged tiles) they were repaired with a resin glass glue before adhering to the piece. I have included a photograph (incredibly difficult to capture though!) -  In no way detracts from the overall look of the piece though and the repair is smooth to the touch.

PROCESS HIGHLIGHTS:

🔶 Stabilised the legs and replaced missing piece of trim

🔶 Whole piece cleaned, stripped and sanded

🔶 created clay leaves - added to each leg

🔶 Gold metal leaf gilded all over

🔶 Dark glaze created to antiquate and define clay details, and here and there

🔶 Removed backing from mirror tiles leaving the silvering in tact

🔶 Antiquated the mirror tile silvering (all 111 of ‘em!) and adhered to piece

🔶 Oiled, waxed, buffed top surface

🔶 Whole piece sealed, waxed, buffed and glass cleaned

*Care note*: this piece will just need a dry dust as and when. The top surface (wood) can be re-waxed approximately 3 times per year. Any cleaning chemicals may damage the finish to this piece. As with all furniture, I always advise something protective placed under any object to be place on top.
