Antique Coffee Table

This solid wood table is such a gorgeous shape, with a lovely round top and cabriole legs.

Whilst removing the old finish, I was delighted to discover a wonderful flame patterned veneer applied over the wood on the top surface! So I wanted to keep it, but preserve it and bring it to life further, so applied several coats of resin. It now has an amazing glass-like shine (which you’ll see from the reflections in the pictures).

The tortoise shell effect trim is hand painted and I feel really works with the veneer and pinky-peach base colour.

The appliqué on the legs was my own design made out of clay, and although I wanted detail in that area, I wanted that detail to be kept simple. Dark wax was then added for depth and a more lived in look, and finished off with touches of gold gild.

I feel this table has an air of regality to it, but in a more unconventional way so would looks fabulous in many homes (not just palaces ;-) hehe.

PROCESS HIGHLIGHTS:

🔸 Whole piece cleaned and stripped of old finish

🔸 Hand made appliqué applied to tops of legs

🔸 A blended base colour applied to the frame and legs

🔸 Dark wax applied for depth and to create a more lived in look

🔸 Touches gold gild applied to the appliqué, feet and rims

🔸 Whole base sealed

🔸 Hand painted tortoise shell trim applied and smaller gold rim hand painted just above it

🔸 Top veneer patched up in places and resin layers applied over the whole top piece and sides for a glass-like shine and to give protection. (As with any resin surface, I always suggest it’s a must to use a coaster underneath items placed on top to protect it)
