This gorgeous sideboard is made by Waring & Gillows, renowned for extremely high quality furniture. It was previously used as a writing desk, but I think it was originally made as a dressing table. It has been totally restyled and hand painted with my own maximalist design and artwork.

The middle drawer originally had a lock that didn’t function, so I’ve placed the replacement knob over the keyhole so is no longer visible. The drawers also have a good and flush closure.

I’m forever inspired by all manner of things, but this particular piece was inspired simply by nature. The design is meant to resemble a beautiful pond with two Banded Damoiselle damselflies, lily pads and a water lily. The damselflies have been painted in custom blended metallics, and the base colour is Annie Sloan Oxford Navy chalk paint, blended into a flat black paint.

This is a real eye catching statement piece! Why not bring outside nature into your home? 💁🏼‍♀️✨ :-).

MEASUREMENTS:

H - 76.5 cm

W - 114.5 cm

D - 52.5 cm

PROCESS HIGHLIGHTS:

🔸 Whole piece cleaned, stripped of old finish and deep scratches repaired

🔸 Base colour applied to whole piece

🔸 Damselfly bodies painted onto Sumi paper (a Japanese calligraphy paper) and decoupaged onto the legs

🔸 Wings added to the front and sides so there is continuous artwork all round

🔸 Lily pads and lily painted onto the top surface using blended paints to reach the desired colours

🔸 Drawers lightly waxed and lined with lightly textured flower and butterfly paper

🔸 Hardware replaced (due to piece missing an original knob) with antique pulls from another item of furniture. They were cleaned, gold wax gilded, then buffed

🔸 Whole piece was sealed - the damselflies have a satin finish, so as not to dull the metallics. The rest has a flat (matte) finish applied.
